Course Abstract:

Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) has become the most common imaging modality in dental practice. Currently the majority of dental clinics and practitioners in Canada have access to 3-dimensional imaging. Despite their extensive use, the different 3D imaging equipment haven’t been used to their full potential, due to lack of additional training. Many practitioners select the fields of view (FOV) that address their clinical needs and hence tend to overlook the fact that they are responsible for the patient as a whole. Therefore, the first step towards better use of CBCT is to understand proper selection of FOV and exposure parameters for designated clinical tasks.

CBCT images show a wide range of anatomical and pathological entities with which dentists need to familiarize themselves. In addition, studies have shown that CBCT images are accompanied by several incidental findings. The combination of multiple factors such as selection of FOV and complex anatomy, coupled with several incidental findings, increase the complexity of interpretation of 3D imaging. Hence, this CE course aims to provide an opportunity for clinicians to learn how and why to select the appropriate field of view for a designated clinical task. Participants will also gain the ability to review incidental findings on CBCT scans.

Educational Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  • Choose the optimum exposure parameters for selected CBCT imaging task
  • Select the appropriate FOV in different CBCT imaging equipment for a variety of clinical scenarios
  • Identify common incidental findings on CBCT scans
