Periodontal (Gum) Disease

Periodontal gum disease

Winnipeg’s Southwest Specialty Group specializes in a wide range of gum disease treatments, primarily concerning Gingivitis and Periodontal Disease.

Bacteria found in dental plaque leads to an infection of the gums, which is known as gingivitis. This is the first stage of periodontal disease. If left untreated, this infection can spread to the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone, which can lead to bleeding, pain, receding gums and lost teeth.

Signs of Periodontal Disease:

  • Bleeding gums while eating, flossing or brushing
  • Loose teeth
  • Gum recession
  • Tenderness of the gums
  • Extra spacing between teeth
  • Chronic halitosis (bad breath)
  • Pus or infection around teeth and gums
  • Receding or red and puffy gums

Periodontal Disease Treatment Options

If caught early in the gingivitis stage, proper cleaning and changes to everyday oral maintenance can cure the issue and reverse damage. In more severe cases, special mouth rinses may be prescribed and surgery may be necessary.

In these more severe cases, Periodontal Surgery can reverse the damage caused by periodontal disease, rebuilding the gums, periodontal ligament and bone that support your teeth. Periodontal disease can often lead to pockets in your gums that store plaque. The goal of the surgery is to remove those pockets, rebuild damaged structures and create an environment that can support long-term oral health and hygiene.
