Periodontics

What is a Periodontist?

Periodontics is a dental specialty focused on conditions and diseases (Gingivitis, Periodontal Disease, etc.) affecting the gums and bones surrounding your teeth.

Despite great advancements in oral health and gum care, gum disease still affects 4 out of 5 people, and it is the number one cause of lost teeth. Even more importantly, gum disease has now been linked to issues with overall health, especially heart disease and diabetes.

We cannot overstress the importance of proper gum health — and our team is here to help.

Understanding the Oral Systemic Connection

The Oral Systemic Connection refers to the association between gum disease and a number of serious health issues, primarily heart disease and diabetes. While the cause and effect relationship between gum disease and heart disease is still not concrete, many researchers believe that it’s the inflammation caused by gum disease that increases the risk of heart attack and stroke.

In the case of diabetes, recent research suggests that gum disease can actually increase blood sugar levels, making diabetes harder to control. In both cases, this serves as further indication of the importance of proper oral health.
