Course Overview:
This course will focus on contemporary orthodontic strategies that can improve the management of patients with multidisciplinary treatment needs. Emphasis will be placed on the use of orthodontic mini-implants (MIs) due to the numerous possibilities they provide for limited tooth movements in cases where full treatment is not indicated or needed. Their small dimensions, the ease of insertion and removal, as well as their relatively small cost in comparison to regular dental implants are further factors making them an effective tool in the orthodontic practice. Clinical recommendations will be given for the application of mini-implants in restorative cases with limited orthodontic requirements.
In addition, the course will review special considerations in patients with temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs). The role of occlusion and orthodontic tooth movements in this patient population will be analyzed and discussed.
Course Objectives:
- Outline mechanical and biological principles for the use of orthodontic mini-implants
- Provide recommendations for insertion sites and case selection
- Review indications and contraindications for the use of mini-implants
- Present treatment mechanics in limited orthodontic cases
- Review normal TMJ physiology and anatomy
- Explore deviations from normal function and their clinical implications
- Review the role of occlusion in TMDs
Course Goals:
After this presentation the attendees will be able to:
- To understand the indication of orthodontic mini-implants and their added value to the orthodontic treatment
- To properly identify cases suitable for orthodontic mini-implants
- Understand the interrelation of TMDs and dental occlusion, and the role of orthodontics in the treatment planning process
