Course Abstract:

Dental practitioners often come across cases of oral lesions. A good knowledge of a lesion’s clinical characteristics is required for the identification, diagnosis and management of common oral pathologic conditions. Although many lesions are fairly common, others are not encountered often. Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCCa) is a relatively uncommon but highly significant pathologic condition. It represents the most common cancer of the oral cavity. Once an oral lesion is noted, the clinical characteristics of size, location, texture, color, symptoms, and duration are necessary to reach a possible diagnosis. A definitive diagnosis often requires a biopsy or culture of the lesion. The clinical and histopathologic correlation will allow the clinician to form a treatment plan for the proper management of the lesion. The first part of this course will cover fairly common oral pathologic conditions. The second part of this course will discuss the risk factors (including those that can be influenced by the dental health team), the clinical presentations, the differential diagnosis, the staging, and the management of OSCCa. The current status of diagnostic adjunct tests for OSCCa will also be addressed.

The presented content is a useful review for all members of the dental team who want to get accustomed with oral pathologic conditions in the dental practice.

Educational Objectives

  • Review the most common oral lesions encountered in clinical practice
  • Identify the clinical and histopathologic characteristics that will lead to a definitive diagnosis
  • Describe major aspects of differential diagnosis that will lead to proper intervention
  • Summarize all options for the correct management and treatment of common oral pathologic conditions
  • Review the current Canadian oral cancer and OSCCa statistics
  • Identify the risk factors for and the clinical presentations of OSCCa
  • Identify selected pathologic conditions that may mimic the clinical presentations of OSCCa
  • Discuss the staging and management of OSCCa
  • Review the validity of diagnostic adjuncts for OSCCa
